Mixed media study. Delicate and detailed watercolor/gouache of a half-woman half-bird figure. The dark haired woman wears highly ornate jewelry on her neck and ears and a crown on her head. Her arms and body are that of a bird, she sits perched on a tree and appears to be singing. Signed lower right and dated 1848. Matted and framed under glass. Viktor Mikhaelovich Vasnetsov grew up in a northern Russian village, his very soul was steeped in the poetry of Russian epic literature. He wasn't only the first artist to use subjects from folklore, but also the first to borrow methods and techniques from national folk art.
