Description
Qianlong period (1736-1795)
With rectangular overhanging top above a conforming case fitted with two short dovetailed drawers separated by a vertical strip of zitan, each drawer with zitan interiors and retaining their original yellow brass bail handles; the drawer faces carved with opposing five-claw dragons, pursuing a flaming pearl amidst clouds, above a carved frieze also carved with a pair of opposing dragons in clouds, separated by a central flaming pearl; the case supported by square legs of huanghuali in front and zitan in back, the mixed-wood legs connected by a horizontal strip of zitan running along the sides of the case and terminating in club feet. The drawer sides and bottom are of zitan, rather than a secondary wood. On the back of the piece is a 1984 inventory label from Christies, when the piece was sold at auction in New York.

Brasses appear to be original. Surface retains warm patina.
