Description
Yupik Eskimo Element Mask from Hooper Bay Area, Alaska, circa 1920-1930's. The face, carved and painted red and black, sits on an ivory colored polychrome painted seal effigy. The seal has a painted element in his mouth which likely depict his whiskers, and is surrounded by a wooden hoop with the original hand and seal fin elements. Four suspension holes on the reverse have evidence of hide lashings for wearing & dancing. This rare masterpiece of early Yupik Eskimo art would have been ceremonially danced and shows indiginous wear. See "The Living Tradition fo Yup'ik masks" by Ann Fienup-Riordan for similar examples. Measures 19" height x 14" width x 5" depth.
