A large and impressive antique late Georgian Regency to early Victorian, circa 1830, oil on canvas portrait painting, in the style of contemporaneous English portraitists like William Beechey and Joshua Reynolds. Depicts a very well dressed woman of British Tory society. No apparent signature, but verso of canvas is stamped PREPARED BY ROBERSON & MILLER LONGACRE LONDON, a partnership that existed from 1828-1839 and provided supplies and services for artists, including "prepared lead pencils, drawing papers etc, bladder colours for oil painting, ‘prepared cloths and tickens’, prepared panels and millboards, ‘hatchment cloths’, chalks, ‘brushes and pencils’, varnishes, oils and sundries." Artists using Roberson & Miller’s paints included Andrew Plimer, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Hamilton Kerr and Samuel Palmer, and Roberson & Miller canvases were used by J.M.W. Turner. Presented in a decorative wooden frame with profuse relief decoration of grapes and other designs. Good overall condition, with craquelure and some loss to frame. Measures 30 in. x 25 1/4 in.
