Description
USSR Certificate of Authenticity. A 19th Century Romanov Era Russian Eastern Orthodox religious icon depicting Saint Nicholas (circa 270-343), also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker, the traditional model for Santa Claus. Hand painted on board beneath a gilded metal riza, or revetment, a metal cover to protect the icon, detailed with repousse work and opened in places to expose elements of the underlying painting. Nicholas is depicted with as traditionally described, with a bishop's stole around his neck, his right hand raised in a blessing, his left hand holding a Bible. The head of Nicholas is surrounded and encircled with an elaborate removable gilded metal halo. Cyrillic letters to bottom. Backed with fabric. Includes 1981 U.S.S.R. MINISTRY OF CULTURE Certificate of Authenticity, and 1981 receipt from SIAMESE IMPORTS CO. (New York), affixed. Good overall condition with normal age related wear.
