Daniel Webster Free Franked Signature on Letter, Signed as U.S. Senator
3pp of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 10, Washington, D.C., and dated March 14, 1828. Signed "Danl. Webster U.S. Senate" on the address page, directed to Isaac Hays M.D. in Philadelphia. The letter, from Thomas Small, related the names and thesis titles of his recent graduates.
Daniel Webster (1782-1852) was an American lawyer and statesman who served as the U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. At the time this was signed, he was representing Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress. The letter has flattened mail folds, with multiple separations and tears at the folds. Partial wax seal still present. Tape on address page. Light soiling and toning throughout.
