James Buchanan Signed Warrant for a Pardon, Dated During the Onset of Civil War
Single page document signed, 8" x 10". Dated "Washington 21st February, 1861". Signed by President James Buchanan in the last few months of his presidency, "James Buchanan". The signature is bold and vibrant, on a lightly toned page.
By 1860, it was apparent that Buchanan wasn’t going to be a candidate for re-election. Within three months after the election, seven states had left the Union as Buchanan remained as a lame-duck President until Lincoln could take office in March 1861. In his State of the Union message to Congress, Buchanan said he believed the South’s secession wasn’t legal, but the federal government didn’t have the power to stop it. Buchanan's presidency ended in April of 1861, this pardon being one of his last acts as President allowing for the "pardon of Homer Ruggles..."
