A mid-18th century German silver beaker, Munich 1747 by Joseph Grossauer (Großauer) (master 1718, d. 1755) Maximilian III Joseph period, of tapering cylindrical form with incised concentric bands, the upper section with a gilt band. Gilt interior. Marked underneath with town mark and date, makers mark and assay scrape. Height – 7.3 cm / 2.8 incvhes Weight – 127 grams / 4.08 ozt Mark: Rosenberg 3533 Großauer was the son of a Viennese blacksmith and it was in Vienna that he served his apprenticeship as a goldsmith. He married the widow of a Munich goldsmith, Franz Benedikt Leismüller, becoming Master of the Munich Guild of Goldsmiths in 1718. Between 1735 and his death in 1755, Ducal accounts record that he worked for the Bavarian Court, producing items such as two military swords (in 1748) and silver-gilt plates (in 1750). The majority of surviving pieces bearing his mark are ecclesiastical, where most of it is preserved in churches in and around Munich. The Mariahilfkirche in Munich holds his best-known work, a monstrance over a metre high with embossed three-dimensional figures of God the Father and worshipping Saints, dating from around 1710-20.
