Description
**First Time At Auction**

Northern Greece, Thrace, ca. 9th to 7th century BCE. A large bronze spectacle, or double spiral, fibula formed by a single elongated thick wire, that was meticulously twisted in a rotational fashion to create this iconic pattern. Part of a pin attaches to the backside of one spiral's center and articulates on the wire's tip. The pin catch is formed by the curved end on the center of the opposite spiral. Over the ages a gorgeous green patina has formed on the surface. Fibula were used for pinning cloaks and clothing at the shoulder. Ornate ones, such as this, adorned the wealthy and elite and were often buried with their owners to accompany them in the afterlife. Size: 4.18" L x 2" W (10.6 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
