Description
This lot consists of a fine art print on paper, done in the Pop Art style of Robert Indiana (American, 1928-2018). Image depicts a vibrant typographical design with the letters "H-E-A-L" arranged in a neat square. Very similar to "LOVE" (1970), one of Robert Indiana's most recognizable and widely recreated pieces. A graphite inscription at lower right corner reads, "R. Indiana". This unframed piece measures approximately 9.75" x 7".
Several stamps are visible on this piece. One reads, "PRCOF 8". Another stamp, seen on reverse side, reads, in part, "FACTORY. New York."
Robert Indiana (American, 1928-2018) was closely associated with the Pop Art movement. His "LOVE" print was initially created for MoMA's 1965 Christmas card. This was the basis for subsequent screenprints, the iconic "Love" sculpture in Indianapolis, and the 1973 U.S. postage stamp design. Robert Indiana (born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana) served in the United States Army Air Forces and went on to study art at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Edinburgh University, and Edinburgh College of Art before returning to the United States and settling permanently in New York City.
