This lot consists of a graphite illustration on paper, done in the Neoclassicist style of Andre Derain (French, 1880-1954). Image depicts two study sketches of a nude male; shadows carefully hashed out across the two delicate figures. A compelling addition to any collection. Unframed measurements approximately 8.5" x 11.75".

A small, circular stamp at lower left corner reads, "Atelier [Studio] Andre Derain". Same stamp can be seen on reverse side of sketch.

Andre Derain (French, 1880-1954) was a painter, sculptor, and founding member of the Fauvist art movement. Derain studied engineering and even had a brief stint in the military before devoting himself solely to the art of painting. Working closely with Matisse, Andre Derain was deeply influenced by the climes of the Mediterranean seaside, as well as Pointillist painting techniques and bold use of color. His close relationship with Henri Matisse eventually blossomed into Fauvism.
