Description
A truly saddening Auschwitz concentration camp prisoner's letter on official camp stationery, 4pp. 8vo., with censor's stamp. Prisoner Zygmunt Pociecho, born April. 13, 1924, Prisoner No. 1016, Block 16, writes to his 'Mama' Luise in the Polish city of Bielsko. Through the letter, Pociecho asks for news about home, inquires about her health, and begs for a response. The sender adds 'Schutzhaftling Pole' ('protective custody prisoner Pole') above his name, a label given to political dissidents who were arrested, but not charged with any crime. Some spots of staining, two 1 in. splits, else very good. Sold with transmittal envelope, with Auschwitz hand cancel dated Apr. 2, 1941, suggesting the letter was written when Pociecho was just 17-years-old.
