Description
Charles (Chico) Wheeler (American; Florida, 1946-2019). Original oil painting on waffle board. Titled "Gambling Game," an interior scene with ten human figures around a billiards pool table. The scene is based on Eddie's Place, the Fort Pierce, Florida bar where Highwayman artist Alfred Hair (1941-1971) was shot and killed during a dispute. The figures represent Highwaymen artists and others who were putatively present that night, including, clockwise from center top: Harold Newton, Shirley Roberts (daughter of Livingston Roberts), Sam Newton, Al Black, Livingston Roberts, Unnamed Female, Charles Chico Wheeler, Unnamed Female, Alfred Hair, and Unnamed Female. Signed lower right C. WHEELER. Wheeler and his companion Florida Highwaymen were young 1950s and 1960s era African American landscape artists mentored by Albert Ernest(Beanie) Backus (American, 1906-1990), who was regarded as the Dean of Florida Painters. Presented in a polychrome wooden frame. Good overall condition, wear to frame. Measures 24 in. x 36 in. (board), 28 in. x 40 1/2 in. Hill Auction Gallery will not ship.
