Description
James Gibson (American; Florida, 1938-2017). Original oil painting on upson board. Florida wetlands landscape with lushly depicted green cypress and palm trees, mangroves and other flora surrounding a central inlet with the setting sun reflecting on the water surface. Signed lower right J. GIBSON. Gibson was an original founding member of The Florida Highwaymen, young 1950s and 1960s era African American landscape artists mentored by Albert Ernest (Beanie) Backus (American, 1906-1990), who was regarded as the Dean of Florida Painters. Presented in a rustic wood frame. Fair condition, with multiple areas of wear and paint loss, water staining and warping to back of board, and normal wear to frame, craquelure to top center. Measures 24 in. x 36 in. (board), 28 3/4 in. x 40 3/4 in. (framed). Hill Auction Gallery will not ship. Gallery will refer a local shipper for international buyers.
