Item Details
Description
Paire of painted porcelain groups (1725-1792)

Description:
Pair of painted porcelain groups with base, each group marked Chantilly. From the 17th century, Europe sought the secret of porcelain manufacturing in order to reduce the costly imports from the Far East. Chantilly became one of the first places of porcelain production in France, under the leadership of Louis IV Henri de Bourbon-Condé. In 1725, on behalf of the Duke of Bourbon, the chemist Cicaire Cirou developed a paste of soft porcelain, that is to say without kaolin, but distinguished from earthenware by its translucent appearance. Fired at a lower temperature than hard porcelain, it allows the use of a much more varied range of underglaze colors. Production extends from 1725 to 1792 and resumes irregularly after the Revolution until 1870.
