Kitagawa Utamaro (Japanese c.?1753-1806). An original woodblock print, titled "Washing Hair," depicting a semi nude woman combing her wet hair. Printed on linen paper, and presented in a paper matte cover frame, with an inside SAMPLE stamp and additional gallery stamp with NUMBER 326. Artist marks to upper left of work in Japanese characters. The artist, Utamaro, is one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, and is best known for his bijin okubi-e "large-headed pictures of beautiful women" of the 1790s. The original is held in the Rijksmuseum of the Netherlands. Good antique condition. Measures 15 1/2 in. x 10 1/4 in. (work), 19 in. x 13 in. (matte frame).
