Description
Utagawa Hiroshige, born Ando Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858). An original antique 19th Century Japanese woodblock, titled, "Nihon Embankment and Yoshiwara," part of the series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," a tremendously popular series of ukiyo-e prints first published in serialized form from 1856–1859. This image is listed as "number 100, part 4: Winter." Includes authentification information to back. The artist, Hiroshige, is considered the last great master of the ukiyo-e tradition, which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. The term ukiyo-e translates as "pictures of the floating world." The antique print is "tipped" on to a backing card stock paper from the top left corner. Beneath the print, on the backing card stock, is a statement of genuineness by S.M. Shiba of Miyanoshita, Japan along with the artist's name and period (although his birth year is rendered incorrectly.) Good antique condition. Measures 14 in. x 10 in. (including border).
