Description
Robert E. L. Rainey (1914–2002), Chicago artist; Oil on Canvas on stretcher, framed, signed and titled to reverse, "Cat on the Bed" and dated "1-9-39," signed to lower edge recto " reni 5-8-40". Height of art 16 inches (40.5 cm.) X width of art 20 1/4 inches (51.5 cm.). NOTE: An expressionist cityscape probably in Chicago of a demolished house with a black cat and a bathtub, someone putting out garbage cans and with humorous advertising signage, "VOTE FOR CROOK" and "SEXLURE COSMETICS / at all Woolworth 10cents." Rainey signed his works "Reni", a play on the name of Italian Baroque painter Guido Reni. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_E._L._Rainey
