Description
carved wooden helmet mask with real Bull horns attached. The Bidjogo people of Bissagos archipelago, Guinea Bissau, hold initiation rituals for young girls and boys, according to their age group. These initiation processes are called Manratche. It is believed that only the initiated can become ancestors as the uninitiated can not create religious objects used for communicating with the afterworld. Such masks are important part of their religious beliefs. The mask measures 25.5 x 22 inches. Provenance: Ex Private Oregon collection.
