Lot Essay: J.E. Gourgue is one of Haiti's most celebrated and renowned painters of the 20th century. At age 17 Gourgue was encouraged by Hector Hyppolite to join Port-au-Prince's Centre d'Art.
In 1948, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) exhibited Gourgue's "The Magic Table" and the painting remains in their permanent collection.
