Description
China, dated 1981. Large scroll painting titled "Gourds" by Zhu Qizhan (1892-1996). Qizhan is heralded today as one of China's foremost modern artists with a museum dedicated to his art in Shanghai. His still lifes and landscapes are renowned for their exuberance of spirit and his deliberate integration of Western and Chinese influences. His works can also be found in the British Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. With original shipping tube from L.J. Wender NYC, the gallery at which Qizhan held his first U.S. solo exhibition. Purchased 5/6/88 (see photocopy of receipt).

Ex: Estate of Diran Dohanian, distinguished art historian and Asian art specialist. Most of Professor Dohanian's collection was formed in the 1960s-70s, beginning when he was residing in India conducting research for his book, "The Mahayana Buddhist Sculpture Of Ceylon." He later developed a keen interest in Japanese and Chinese scroll paintings, a number of which are included here.
