Charles Darwin; The Decent of Man (1871) Two Volume First Edition, First Issue in Original Green Cloth W/Custom Clamshell Case - This is a First Edition, First Issue printing of Charles Darwin's The Decent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, presented in two volumes in original green cloth. This is an extremely scarce First Edition, First Issue of both volumes, with "transmitted" the first word on p.297 in the first volume; in the second volume, printer's note on verso of half-title, errata on verso of title, and the postscript leaf after p.viii. and January ads in both volumes. The First Edition contains two parts: The Descent of Man itself, and Selection in Relation to Sex. "The word 'evolution' (in Volume 1, p.2) occurs for the first time in any of Darwin's works." (Freeman, 128-9). Both volumes are in surprisingly good condition with gilt titles clean volume two being especially bright. Both volumes endpapers highly foxed. Often misunderstood, Darwin never said that man was descended from apes. That important and at the time controversial statement, was that man's ancestors, if alive today, would have to be classified among the primates. The Decent of Man is "One of the most significant books ever written (SIGMUND FREUD)." Freeman 937.
