Description
1720 Francis Bacon English ESSAYS Political Philosophy Law Good v Evil Science
“Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.”
― Francis Bacon
Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion.
A rare 1720 English printing of ‘The Essays’ by Francis Bacon, edited and translated by William Willymott. This collection of personal theories covers a wide variety of topics dealing with human emotion such as death, revenge, parenting, marriage vs single life, love and envy, atheism vs religion, nobility, wealth and riches, gardening, social factions, anger, and many more. ‘The Essays’ was the origin to many well-known proverbs and aphorisms such as:
"If the Hill will not come to Mahomet, Mahomet will go to the hill" (‘Of Boldness’)
‘The Essays’ were highly influential to politicians and great thinkers as well. According to Allibone,
“This is the work by which Bacon is best known to the majority of readers.” … “Edmund Burke preferred [The Essays] to the rest of his writings, and Dr. [Samuel] Johnson observed, that their excellence and value consists in their being the observations of a strong mind, and you will find there what you seldom find in other books.” (Allibone)
