Item Details
Description
ACOMA POLYCHROME OLLA, VERTICAL SPLIT CHECKERBOARD STYLE, by MARY HISTIA (1881-1973), ca. 1960 Condition: This was glued together from many shards, with two missing pieces, on the top rear. It was potted eggshell so thin that it was almost impossible that this pot could survive. Mark: "Mary A Histia" written on base. "Made in Acoma Sky City, New Mex., yr 1961" painted on base. Description: Vertical split rectangle checkerboard pattern with two-way diagonal lines: aka butterfly pattern. Note: She was a very famous early potter, older than Mary Chino, Jessie Garcia and Lucy Lewis. She made this pot when she was 80 years old. 1) Southern Pueblo Pottery, p. 153 says she was known as Acoma Mary. She was the most famous Acoma potter before WWII, and was honored by President Roosevelt as his favorite potter. See also p. 301 for an almost identical pot made by the (40 years) younger Marie Torivio. The only apparent difference is the vertical splits in the rectangles, which are double lined in the Histia pot. (2) Southwestern Pottery, p. 46 says: "Mary Histia, was perhaps the best-known Acoma potter before Lucy Lewis and Marie Chino came into prominence." (3) Acoma & Laguna Pottery p. 162, shows a 1931 pot by Mary Histia, and calls her "one of Acoma's great potters". 8.5"d x 6.5"h.
