PURVIS FLORENCE EGLIE, born April 16, 1914 in Utica, New York, passed away on May 19, 2011 at the age of 97. She was the wife of her beloved husband, the late W. Scott Purvis Jr. for 72 happy years. She was the loving mother to daughter Sue P. Simancek, and sons W. Scott Purvis III with his wife, Sue, and Bruce J. Purvis MD and partner Randy Hoehns. Also surviving Florence are eight great-grandchildren, Jessica, Caitlin, Ryan and Marissa from grandson Mark and wife Dawn Simancek, Dalton, Scarlett and Savannah from grandson Tim and wife Stacy Simancek, Reese from grandson David and wife Valerie Simancek. She was well loved and remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Florence was well known throughout the Birmingham-Bloomfield area. After moving to Birmingham with Scott and Family in 1948, when her husband was transferred from NY State to Michigan, she immediately became active in the First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham and her children's schools. She was active in community affairs. She became president for Birmingham's Friends and Baldwin Library, president of Church Women United, being chosen the "First Valiant Woman" of that group in 1980. Florence did volunteer work at the Red Cross, Presbyterian Village Medical Center, the former Pontiac Mental Hospital, and for retarded children. During her years Florence also became a published writer. She wrote on art and artists, original Biblical plays, which she produced, Civil War women and the early "opera star", Maggie Finlayson of Detroit. Florence was continually teaching the "Bible" and "Peace" at her church. As she taught the Bible, she created 60 Bible dolls, which she showed and lectured on over 350 times throughout the area. Florence was also known for her lectures and writing on Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel/Fresco paintings. She also created a fashion show on Biblical women, which was given in many of the area's churches.
