Description
A RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON, "Ρόδον τό αμάραντον (Our Lady of the Unfading Flower)," PROBABLY MOSCOW, 18TH CENTURY, parcel-gilt and oil on wood in a period frame. Icon: 10" x 8" Frame: 19" x 17" Note: Mary is crowned Queen of Heaven and wears a pearl trimmed robe. She holds a rose in one hand the standing Christ Child in the other. He is dressed in luxurious robes of exotic animal pattern with pearl jeweled sleeves wearing a flat crown, he holds a jeweled orb and scepter. The gilt background painted with an incense vessel, a double-handled vase with a sheaf of wheat, an eleven light candelabra, a flag or rectangle of red and blue-black vertical diagonal with a white border, the bible, and chalice. Celebrated by Eastern Orthodox on the Feast Day, April 16. The banner unfurled by the archangels Gabriel and Michael reads, "Ρόδον τό αμάραντον, χαίρε η μόνη βλαστήσασα, τό μήλον τό εύοσμον. (Hail, from whom alone sprouted the unfading rose, the sweet‑smelling apple.)
Condition
Darkening to lower half from apparent candle or incense exposure, some losses, inpainting, craquelure, but overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
