East Asia, Japan, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fine example of a hossu, a symbolic fly whisk used by Zen Buddhist priests to clear flies away without killing them, and to symbolize their ability to teach Buddhist Dharma. It is made from a blonde piece of wood carved into a long cylindrical handle and has blonde horsehair attached at one end. Size: 18.7" W (47.5 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in April 2011; ex-private Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan collection
