East Asia, China, Zhou Dynasty, ca. 1046 to 256 BCE. A cast-bronze knife used as currency during the Zhou Dynasty. The knife has a wide handle with parallel lines in relief, a curved rectangular blade with points projecting from the corners, and a small, integral suspension ring. A set of 3 raised Chinese characters adorns both sides of the blade, though age and fading have rendered them illegible. A nice example covered in lustrous brown patina. Size: 6.95" L x 1.1" W (17.7 cm x 2.8 cm).
Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired from Goldberg Auctions, Los Angeles, California, USA in 1968

Condition
Repaired from two pieces with minor separation and light adhesive residue along break line. Slight bending to overall form, softening to some raised details, and minor nicks to ring handle and blade. Light earthen deposits and great brown patina throughout.
