Description
**First Time At Auction**
Central Asia, southern India, Kerala region, ca. first half of the 19th century CE. A hand-carved ceremonial object known as a kevadi that depicts a pair of finely adorned male attendees flanking a portly effigy of Ganesh, the elephantine god of clearing obstacles and paving the way for one to move forward in life. The kevadi was used to support a statue of a deity - in this case Ganesh - during a religious ceremonial procession. The distinctive curve shape of the lower protrusions was meant to be carried on the shoulders of the statue, and a pole was inserted through the central rectangular hole that is flanked by abstract avian creatures. Size: 8.75" W x 20.125" H (22.2 cm x 51.1 cm)

Condition
Repair to left figure and corresponding area of verso, with small chips and very light adhesive residue along break lines. Loss to frontal rectangular element just above legs as shown. Minor nicks to figures, obverse details, peripheries, and verso, with light encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Nice patina throughout.
