Description
This lot consists of a mixed media (likely acrylic and watercolor) drawing on paper, done in the Surrealist style of modern artist Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989). "Dali" is handwritten in ink at bottom right. Image depicts a colorful butterfly. Hand written words appear at top of paper -- likely foreign and illegible to this reviewer. A unique and impressive addition to any collection. This unframed piece measures approximately 11.25" x 7.5".
Salvador Dali was born May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain. From an early age, Dali was encouraged to practice his art and would eventually go on to study at an academy in Madrid. In the 1920s, Dali went to Paris and began to associate with the likes of Picasso, Magritte, and Miro. This critical juncture would give way to the birth of Dali's first Surrealist phase. However, with the rise of fascist leader Francisco Franco in Spain, Dali's was eventually forced to leave the Surrealist movement, and he continued to create on his own terms for the duration of his life. Dali was an imaginative, visionary force of the 20th century, defining surrealist and modern art for generations to come.
