Description
This lot consists of a unframed acrylic painting on canvas, rendered in the abstract expressionist style of Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956). This sizeable piece is a neverending tumble of freely poured lines, all mingling over a black background. A veritable feast for the eyes. This handsome painting would be a highlight to any modern art collector's gallery. Overall measurements approximately 18" x 24".
Reverse side of piece features a handwritten graphite inscription on the frame which reads, "The Bird on a Limb". One stamp reads, "New York".
Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956) was a hugely prolific artist of the mid-20th century, whose "drip painting" (sometimes called "action painting") broke ground for countless artists - from Helen Frankenthaler to Morris Louis, Frank Stella, and many others. He was deeply influenced by the writings of Carl Jung, the paintings of Janet Sobel, and the indigenous art of North America. Today, Pollock's work lives on in a blaze of legend, movement, and critical debate. This was exactly his intention.
Pollock's wife, the artist Lee Krasner, once offered an anecdote that seems to say it all: "Pollock used to give his pictures conventional titles ... but now he simply numbers them. Numbers are neutral. They make people look at a picture for what it is, a pure painting."
