Description
This lot consists of a mixed media (pastel, acrylic, and graphite) illustration on paper, done in the modern style of Cubist artist Rufino Tamayo (Mexican, 1899-1991). "Tamayo" is written by hand at lower right, along with the inscription, "O-76" (perhaps a date). This richly colored image features one abstracted human figure with hand outstretched to its neighbor, also an abstracted human figure. The two forms are surrounded by referential shapes and lines that only add to the calculated precision of this gorgeous piece. A handsome work of art that is sure to highlight any collector's gallery. This unframed piece measures approximately 12.5" x 11.25".
Rufino Tamayo (Mexican, 1899-1991) was born in Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico, the son of a seamstress and a shoemaker. As a young orphan, Tamayo was influenced early on by his Zapotec ancestry. RufinoTamayo, along with other muralists such as Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, came to define the twentieth century in Mexican art. He is known for combining modern European painting styles with the most powerful tenets of Mexican folk art.
