Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on board, framed under glass. This Russian expressionist painting depicts a human figure glowing in shades of cool teal and blue. A hand-painted inscription at lower left corner reads, "A. Jawlensky". Overall framed measurements approximately 14" x 13"; image sight approximately 8.5" x 7.75".
Alexej von Jawlensky (Russian, 1864-1941) was an influential painter active in Germany. Jawlensky was a key member of Der Blaue Reiter (later Der Blaue Vier). Alongside Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky fused folk art traditions with contemporary abstraction and color theory. Jawlensky consistently exhibited in Europe throughout the 1920s. His visionary paintings are now included in the permanent collections of major museums in New York, Philadelphia, and Germany.
