Description
Polychromed Carved Wooden Trade Sign, 19th c., for "Joshua Hutton & Son Top Quality Pork Butcher Nobility," the arched sign with a large central relief pig figure, H.- 26 1/2 in., W.- 43 in., D.- 3 in. Provenance: The Estate of Paul Blaum, Covington, Louisiana.
Condition
Condition is consistent with age and use. Loss to paint on edges. Visible shrinkage crack through top of arch. The paint is peeling at crack. The gesso undercoat is visible at spots on exterior. Paint peeling and repaired on top of pig, but visibly detaching from sign. Shrinkage crack below pig, across entire sign. The proper left and right side of frame showing shrinkage cracks to joints. Loss of paint and gesso to proper right side (approximately 2 in. x 2 in.) on base of tree.
