Description
Good German .800 Silver Jugendstil Plateau, ca. 1899, by M. H. Wilkens, Bremen, from an 1899 design, probably by Georg Fichtler, retailed by J. H. Werner, Berlin, of rounded lozenge form, the cast silver openwork rim well-chased with lilies-of-the-valley, water lilies, bulrushes, thistles and other wild flora on a wavy ground, with robust acanthus scrolls and opposing rococo cartouches, fitted with a conforming mirrored plate with wood backing, monogrammed on each cartouche "H.de L. V." for Hugh de Lacy Vincent, w. 19-3/4", l. 31-1/2". Provenance: Hugh de Lacy Vincent (1852-1913), to his son Hugh Evelyn Vincent (1890-1951), thence by descent through the family.
Condition
Overall Condition: Good. No dents, breaks or repairs noted. Beautiful detail, with some light wear consistent with age. Monogrammed as noted in the catalogue description. A few light scuffs to the mirrored plate, with some scattered areas of flaking at the extreme perimeter. The wooden underside with a few splits but entirely sound and secure. Marked along the lower edge with the Wilkens trademark (a press), the German "800 crown & moon" mark in use from 1884, and the Wilkens model/production number 126507, and engraved on the upper edge "J. H. Werner - Berlin - Friedrich Str. 173".
