Description
Finely Engraved Dutch Silver Oblong Tobacco Box, commemorating the Amsterdam tax riots of 1748, lid with a detailed image of the riots near City Hall at the Dam Square during the execution of two accused instigators of the rebellion, underside with an image of the looting of houses in the city, front with engraved image of soldiers firing at fleeing rioters and two cartouches engraved "Oproer tot Amsterdam van den 24" and "Tot den 28 Juny 1748" (Amsterdam riot from the 24th to the 28th of June 1748), back with engraved image of soldiers shooting a man and two cartouches engraved "De Zweed" and "Geroot", with reeded rim and base edge, gilt washed interior with Amsterdam city mark and date mark M for 1771, no maker's mark but similar to a box made by Leendert Beekhuysen in 1748, 1 1/8" high, 6 1/4" x 2 1/4", 7.78 ozt. Image wear to base, gilding loss to interior. Provenance: From a Damariscotta ME home.
