Description
Early Civil Rights Program Honoring Edgar D. Nixon, 1957

2pp, 8.5" x 11". A program for an event held on August 13, 1957 at Holt Street Baptist Church, honoring Edgar Daniel Nixon. Sponsored by the Shaaban Temple No. 103, an "Ancient Egyptian Arabic Nobles of Mystic Shrine."

Nixon was an early civil rights activist and helped launch the Montgomery Improvement Association (M.I.A.). He, along with attorney Clifford Durr, bailed Rosa Parks out of jail and worked with the Women’s Political Council to organize the Montgomery bus boycott, and enlisted the help of Martin Luther King, Jr. to lead the movement. Nixon continued his work for civil rights for the rest of his life, and was awarded the Walter White Award from the NAACP in 1985.

Areas of soiling and foxing throughout. Flattened creases at the bottom corners.
