Saml Blatchford, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
February 19th, 1883.
Samuel Blatchford (1820-1893) was born in New York and graduated from Columbia College in 1837. He served as private secretary to Governor William H. Seward in 1840, and read law. In 1854, he moved to New York City, where he started the law firm of Blatchford, Seward & Griswold. In 1867, President Andrew Johnson appointed Blatchford to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. In 1878, President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed Blatchford as Circuit Judge of the Second U.S. Judicial Circuit. Four years later, President Chester A. Arthur nominated Blatchford to the United States Supreme Court, a position he held until his death eleven years later. He was the first person to serve at all three levels of the federal judiciary—District Judge, Circuit Judge, and Supreme Court Justice. He had special expertise in admiralty law and patent law.
