Provenance: Obtained at auction from private art collector.Known for his printmaking and cubist painting, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was active in Spain and France. Over his career, Picasso went through various phases and styles. At the age of 19, Picasso was already an established draftsman and went to France where he was introduced to Impressionist art and where he studied the Old Masters. Shortly thereafter, Pablo what is called the Blue Period of his career began with his pieces primarily focused the on blue colors of the palette and has been said to be influenced by his childhood years where he struggled to survive in poverty, often cold and starving. After 1904, the start of the Picasso Rose Period began where his darker work transformed into warmer and happier art. Around this time, he had a long-term relationship with Fernande Olivier, his first long-term female relationship. In 1908, Picasso along with Georges Braque (1882-1963) as well as other contributors, focused on the beginnings of Cubism often making a collage, still life, and portraits. Picasso, Braque and others worked closely together through the beginning of World War I and due to how closely they collaborated, it is often hard to determine the actual artist of some of the pieces that were made. From 1914 to 1918, Pablo focused primarily on drawings, print making, etchings, woodcuts, dry points, among other artforms while in Rome, Italy. By this point, his commercial art became significant component of his collections with various themes of expression. In the 1920s, Picasso form was more abstract with images of distorted portraits of figurines that lead to Surrealist exhibits in Europe. This period may have been the most productive for Picasso. By the 1940s, Pablo Picasso was extremely active in clay and later in ceramics. Throughout his career, Picasso was a pioneer in various artforms and contributed a full spectrum of work. His work is collected, exhibited, and displayed around the world by collectors and museums. Picasso art has sold for over $175,000,000 at auction with Les femmes d Alger selling for just under $180,000,000 at auction in 2015.1% of hammer price for all items sold at Masters of Art Volume II Art Series Auction will be donated to the Humane Society.
