Description
A Greek terracotta pot-support with a mask of Papposilenos, Ptolemaic Egypt, c. 3rd - 1st Century BC, with detailed features and a long, striated beard. His hair is depicted in the manner of a stylized acanthus leaf. 4 1/4 x 3 x 3 1/4 in (10.7 x 7.6 x 8.3 cm). Light deposits. At some point during the end of the 3rd Century BC self-contained braziers of terracotta became quite popular and were produced at centers in the eastern Mediterranean countries, continuing in this form until the middle of the 1st Century BC. Ex West Midlands, UK private collection.
