Description
Bird's eye view of modern Jerusalem as seen from the east: "Hierosolyma Urbs Sancta, Iudeae, Totiusque Orientis Longe Clarissima…". Latin. Hand-colored copperplate engraving. A key in the cartouche at right identifies 48 points of interest. At top is a Latin verse from the Prophet Ezekiel (chapter 5): "This is Jerusalem! I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her." From: Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg's Civitatus Orbis Terrarum, the most important book of town plans and views published in the 16th Century. Cologne, 1575, Vol, II, No. 54. Laor 1040.
