Description

1825 The Dawn of the Reformation or The Lollards, 1st Edition

Great Britain from A.D. 1400 to A.D. 1546

With a Brief Notice of Events Connected with the Early History of the Reformation

Excerpt; Do not view them any more than for a dog. The people were indignant at hearing this, but Frith smiled, and prayed the Lord to forgive them.

Thus, these two blessed martyrs committed their souls into the hands of God.

We cannot but remark the very different manner in which Cranmer acted in this matter, when compared with the conduct of his predecessor, Wareham.

He evidently did not desire to persecute the Lollards and promoters of the reformation, but still we must regret to see him in any way countenancing these proceedings.

It appears that Cranmers views at that time were by no means so clear as in the latter part of his life, he then was firm in his belief of the doctrine of the real presence in the sacrament, and therefore regarded Frith and others as heretics.

But although he was not sufficiently enlightened to see the doctrines of truth contained in the gospel, in their full extent, yet he had learned enough to induce him to act very differently from the popish prelates of his day.
