EDWARD SHERIFF CURTIS Pl. 419 The Potter Mixing Clay, 1921 11.5x15 Photogravure on Tissue Paper from Portfolio 12 of The North American Indian ASG# ESC/8754
The Curtis caption reads "This woman, so aged that her shriveled skin hangs in folds, still finds pleasure in creating artistic and utilitarian pieces of potter"
Curtis made numerous visits to the Hopi between 1901 and 1922 for images he published in the in the 12th volume, one of two devoted to a single tribe, the other being volume 10 on the Kwakiutl.
Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) between 1898 and 1928 Working in collaboration with many tribal members Curtis created an ethno-historical account combined with photographic notions of character portraiture, environmental portraiture and classical romanticism as well as straight documentary views. He published 20 octavo volumes with around 75 prints per volume each accompanied with a larger portfolio of usually 36 hand pulled photogravures. THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN (1906-1928) is considered the most lavish and elegantly illustrated set of photographic books ever produced. This has lot has original vintage photogravures from this publication made under Curtis supervision.
