MCALPIN & LAMB, Portland , Or. Mt. Hood from Stage Road, Ca. 1890, Albumen print 15.8x20" ASG# M&L/1 title and photographers credit in negative.
Stunning view of Mt. Hood framed by two vertical trees, looking at the valley between the stage roads the volcano.
McAlpin & Lamp, Arthur B. McAlpin (1846-1947) and Charles Y. Lamb (1855-1945) operated a studio in Portland, Oregon from 1889-1895, under their name and that of the Imperial Studio. McAlpin continued on his own until 1924. Lamb was active as a retoucher, operator and photographer in Portland from 1883-1903. He was also an actor. Mautz Biographies of Western Photographers, 1st ed
.
Carleton Watkins in the 1860s and F. Jay Haynes in the 1880s made beautiful mammoth plate albumen prints from wet collodion negatives. Their views are rare so I was surprised and happy recently to find one by an artist I had not seen in my 45 year career looking for these types of prints.
