Description
ANTONIO LOPEZ."Model: Carol La Brie for JAP, 1971. "Fashion study for JAP, Kenzo Takada's early fashion line, published in British Vogue, for British Vogue, September, 1971. 638x503 mm; 25x19¾ mm/inches. Graphite on paper. Signed and captioned, lower image, and verso with the Conde Nast "Brogue" (British Vogue's nickname) stamp. The lower margin states "Please return the drawings to Antonio."Provenance: The artist (to 1980s); gifted to a friend and colleague, New York.An out and proud Nuyorican, LGBTQ advocate, and fashion icon, Lopez was one of the most influential image- and tastemakers of the 1960s through the 80's, mainly in New York. He fought against the latent racism that existed at the time by expanding definitions of beauty and championing women of color and unconventional beauty like LaBrie, as well as Jerry Hall, Pat Cleveland, Alva Chinn, Grace Jones, Amina Warsuma, Jane Forth and Donna Jordan. With his working and romantic partner, the art director Juan Ramos, the avant-garde duo broke barriers by bringing street fashion and a charged sexuality, often a gender-fluid one, onto the runways and style pages, blasting the conventionalities of postwar fashion and defining "ready-to-wear" fashion.Carol LaBrie was the first African-American model to grace the cover of Italian Vogue's 1971 July/August issue. She was among Antonio's favorite models and this graphic, geometric design that features her face-on, sporting a mix of urban, varsity, and classic menswear, showcases the best of their unique styles.
