Circa 1881 Old Vintage Miniature 38 Star US American Flag; Silk ribbon flag with printed text on the reverse that congratulates political candidates--compliments of NYC newspaper. "HURRAH FOR ERHARDT, JACOBUS AND PERLY(sic?)! Compliments of THE MAIL AND EXPRESS".
Research reveals that THE MAIL AND EXPRESS was a NY City newspaper from 1881-1904. In the book, "The New York Evening Express Almanac, Handbook of Politics, Statesman's Manual & Statistical Register..." for 1879, I was able to find all three names on the back of the flag to have public office appointments. Joel B. Erhardt - Police Department Commissioner, John W. Jacobus - 6th Senate District, Henry C. Perley - 8th Senate District.
Vibrant jewel-tone colored flag with 38 dancing stars in a 6-6-7-6-7-6 pattern. In 1876, Colorado Territory was admitted to the Union prompting the addition of a 38th star to the official flag design. The 38 star flag lasted from 1877-1890. Size is 2 - 7/8" x 1 - 5/16"
