[ALEXANDER, William (1767–1816)]. The Costume of the Russian Empire. London: printed by T. Bensley for John Stockdale, 1811 [plates and text watermarked 1806 and 1809]. Folio (345 x 256 mm). Separate titles and text in both English and French. 73 full–page colored stipple engravings (J. Whatman and Edmeads & Co. watermark) including additional engraved title depicting traditional Russian dress by E. Harding after Georgi (some offsetting to text from plates, very scant soiling at extreme margins). Full contemporary olive straight grain morocco elaborately framed in blind and in gilt scrollwork, flat raised bands with gilt scrollwork, citrus morocco lettering–pieces gilt, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles (crown and tips expertly repaired, covers unevenly darkened). FIRST STOCKDALE EDITION, which is a later reprint of the 1803 edition published by William Miller with 17 engravings, 9 of which are after Pallas, not found in the earlier edition. An important and valuable record of the peoples of the Russian Empire during the end of the reign of Empress Catherine the Great and the fourth in the series of costume books originally issued by William Miller.
