Item Details
Description
Carte de Viste of David S Gordonduring the civil war. David Gordon became the second Lieutenant of the 2nd US Cavalry in 1861. He was in a raid at Fairfax Courthouse and was then captured during Bull run and imprisoned first at Libby prison, then at Castle Pickney, Columbia jail and then Salisbury. He was exchanged in August 1862 and came out to a very different unit as they had become the 5th Cavalry and the 2nd Dragoons were now the 2nd Cavalry. He then served as inspector at the US Army parole camp, and then as assistant Adj. General to to General Schenk. He rejoined the 2nd US Cavalry following Gettysburg and was involved in Manassas Gap, Rappahannock Station, and Culpeper Courthouse. In 1864 he was in the Wilderness campaign and Sheridan's raids. He stayed with the Army, eventually moving up the line to Colonel and retired in 1896. He died in 1930 and is buried in Arlington. By the photo it is believed it was taken during the war from the insignia on his uniform appears to be a Lieutenant but is hard to see. Is signed by him and is in very good condition.
