Hector Moncayo (1895-1984) Mid Century c. 195os Oil on Canvas Cattle, Ecuador. In gilt frame measures 25 1/2"x21 1/2". x2". Weight 7 pds. Patriarch of the "Moncayo Painters" of Ecuador, he attended the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Quito [School of Fine Arts of Quito]. He attended the school only for a short time, starting to paint independently in 1908. Cultural landscapes, street-side scenes, flowers, human figures, and portraits became his characteristic themes.He married Elena Merino who also developed a gift for the arts and began painting bucolic landscapes in small formats. Two of their children as well as other members of the extended family also became painters.PROVENANCE: Edwin Moore Brogdon, PhD, collection. Dr. Brogdon was the owner of Brogdon Manor, a stately plantation home, located in the Brogdon Community, near Sumter, SC. The home was built in 1898 by his grandfather William Turner Brogdon. The Brogdon community was comprised of a local country store, cotton gin, sawmill and dairy. William Turner Brogdon was one of the largest planters in Sumter and Clarendon counties at the end of the 19th century.
