Description
Dated 1319 AH = 1901 AD, 160 x 115 cm, South Caucasus
The house-like white arch placed at the upper end of the field of this red-ground prayer rug encloses a form that is hard to interpret and always appears in this position in this type. The centre of the field is dominated by a white box outlined in hooks which contains a central cruciform blossom surrounded by four hooked triangles. The surviving examples of the group are virtually indistinguishable. They are modelled on older prayer rugs woven in the Kuba/Shirvan knotting structure, such as the piece illustrated by Eskenazi. – Very good condition, original finishes all around.
ESKENAZI, JOHN J., L'Arte del Tappeto Orientale. Milan 1983, no. 156 *** HASSON, RACHEL, Caucasian Rugs. L.A. Mayer Memorial Institute for Islamic Studies. Jerusalem 1986, no. 10
